Files and Data Layout

Everything lives under one data root (set in Settings; defaults to the current working directory).

projects/ .elk project files
samples/ WAV files for the sampler (subfolders supported, 4 levels deep)
wavetables/ WAV files for the wavetable synth (2048-sample frames, up to 256 per file)
exports/ rendered mixes, stems, and COLLECT output
samples/edited/ output from trim/stretch/normalize (auto-created)

User preferences (theme, data root, last project) are stored in elktracker.cfg in the data root's working directory.

Auto-save: if licensed, the project is saved to AUTOSAVED.elk on quit (not the current project filename, so your named saves are never silently overwritten) and AUTOSAVED.elk becomes the project that reopens next launch. If no project has ever been opened, the app generates a small demo project.

WAV import: 8/16/24/32-bit PCM and 32-bit float, mono or stereo, at any sample rate (no resampling happens on import — pitch is calculated relative to the file's own rate).

Export WAV: renders the full mix to exports/<name>.wav, always at 44.1 kHz / 16-bit / stereo regardless of your audio device's own rate. Length is estimated automatically (song length + 2 seconds) and capped at 20 minutes; a render that comes out completely silent is flagged with an EXPORTED (SILENT?) message.

Stems: renders each channel separately to exports/<name>_ch1.wav etc. Each stem still passes through the shared reverb/delay sends and the master limiter, so the eight stems won't sum back to an exact bit-match of the full mix.

COLLECT: copies every sample and wavetable actually reached by an instrument that's referenced from the song (not just sitting in an unused slot) into exports/<name>/, along with a copy of the project file, making that folder self-contained to hand to someone else or move to another machine.

MIDI.log: a diagnostic file written to the data root each time you run Settings → DIAGNOSTICS → MIDI TEST — see MIDI Out.
