Gamepad Configuration
Button Mapping Wizard
ElkTracker opens the button mapping wizard automatically on first boot. You can also run it any time from Settings → MAP BUTTONS, which clears any existing mapping and starts over.
The wizard asks for 14 inputs, in this order:
- A — Edit / Insert
- B — Clear cell
- X — a spare face button, defaulted to the same action as B (Clear)
- Y — a spare face button, defaulted to the same action as A (Edit)
- L1 — Back out
- R1 — Dive in
- L2 — Undo
- R2 — Paste
- SELECT — Switch screen
- START — Play / stop 11–14. UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT — d-pad directions
Press the corresponding physical button when prompted. If your device uses a hat switch for the d-pad, the wizard detects this automatically once it reaches the direction steps (11–14) and fills in all four at once (hat input is handled natively and doesn't need individual button mappings).
There's no cancel button mid-wizard; every gamepad press is recorded as whatever step you're on, so if you make a mistake, finish the wizard and run MAP BUTTONS again from Settings to redo it.
Once complete, the wizard writes gamepad.cfg to the data root as plain key=index lines (a=0, b=1, …, or just 10 lines if a hat was detected), which you can also hand-edit directly if you know what you're doing and you'd rather skip the wizard.
